The external appearance of a product essentially influences the quality assessment, with the following criteria determining quality:

• colour
• shine
• structure of the surface

Characteristics such as:

• transparency
• haze
• clarity
• opacity

The visual assessment of color, gloss and transparency is strongly influenced by the individual perception of the observer and external influences (ambient color and brightness). In addition, the possibilities, for example, to put a color impression into words or even to document it are relatively limited.

Only the use of optical measuring instruments according to internationally standardized systems can remedy this situation. This ensures an objective description of colored, glossy or even transparent products.
